Massage Therapy & Medications
EVENT DATES:Saturday, June 21, 2008 through to Sunday, June 22, 2008
TIME: 9:00:00 AM to 5:00:00 PM
VENUE:Delta Guelph Hotel (Guelph, ON)
SPEAKER(s):Randy Persad, RMT, Dip. Pharm.
REGISTRATION LINK: https://secure.omta.com/default.asp?id=1050&event_id=29

This competency-based workshop is designed to teach massage therapists the necessary skills and build the knowledge they need to interpret drug information. It will also help them learn how to use that information to analyze assessment results and to develop safe and effective treatment plans for clients taking medications. In this workshop therapists will learn through 'doing'.

Did you Know?

Prescription and over-the counter medications can affect the way clients respond to a massage treatment. For example, did you know?

Aspirin thins the blood. Deep tissue work can increase the chances of the client being bruised.

Centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxants, such as cyclobenzaprine, can inhibit muscle's inherent protective reflex. This can make it easier to overstretch and injure muscle during treatment.

Some drugs prescribed for AIDS, such as Protease Inhibitors, can reduce sensations from the skin. This can compromise a client's ability to provide feedback on how deep you are working.

Corticosteroids, such as dexamethasone, help manage inflammation. They have a 'catabolic" (i.e. break down) effect on connective tissue. With long-term use, these drugs can impari tissue strength, resilience and sensitivity. Massage techniques that place stress on the muscles, bones or joints of the body can injure these structures.

Therapists need to know how medications affect their clients, how the medications will impact the massage treatment and how to modify treatments to ensure the highest level of client safety.

Participants will also be able to communicate confidently with members of other health care professions about a client's use of medications.

Goals:

Upon completion of this course, participants will possess the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to understand how and why medications work; how medications can influence the outcome of a massage treatment; and how to adapt or plan a treatment that promotes client safety.

At the end of this workshop therapists will be able to:

Understand the language of pharmacology;

Appreciate the variety of prescribed medications and over-the counter preparations;

Describe factors related to drugs that could influence the outcome of a massage assessment and treatment;

Plan and adapt a treatment for a client taking medications and be able to justify that treatment;

Recommend safe hydrotherapy and rehabilitation exercise for a client taking medications;

Know how to work effectively around injection sites, implanted devices and skin patches;

Communicate confidently about medications with members of the health care profession.

More information and registration options...
